POST DESERT

DURING A TRAVEL PERIOD OF SIX MONTHS, THROUGH VARIOUS MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES, I OPENED FOUR SHEETS OF PAPER IN MY SUITCASE AND USED THEM TO DOCUMENT MY CHANGES.  THE CANARY ISLANDS HOSTED ME FOR A MONTH, OFF THE TOURIST TRAIL, OUTSIDE THE POPULATED CITIES.  I COULD ONLY OBSERVE ROCKS, SAND AND VOLCANIC STONES FOR DAYS AND DAYS.  SUDDENLY IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, A STRANGE YELLOW THING CAUGHT MY ATTENTION.  A TINY MOSS CLAMBERED UP ON A ROCK, RESEMBLING A FLOWER.  AND I, THIRSTY FOR COLOUR, FELL IN A SORT OF TRANCE STARING AT IT, DISCOVERING ITS OVERWHELMING BEAUTY.

I TRAINED MY EYE TO A NEW AESTHETIC DURING THIS TRIP.  THE RESULTS OF THIS EXPERIENCE HAVE POURED INTO THESE WORKS: LAVA, CRACKS, SILENCES AND THE DEAFENING WIND WERE IMPRINTED WITH VIOLENT BRUSHSTROKES FULL OF LUMPS.

IN THIS PERIOD, THE USE OF FLAT, TWO-DIMENSIONAL COLOUR WAS INTRODUCED TO ME.  AN EXPERIENCE THAT MADE ME RETHINK ABOUT THE EXUBERANT WEALTH OF THE MEDITERRANEAN, AND THE UNBALANCED PROSPERITY THAT ACCUMULATES IN SOME PARTS OF THE EARTH, LEAVING OTHER PLACES THIRSTY.
